King Kong

King Kong, Peter Jackson’s bloated but magnificent new movie, showcases the Uranus-Neptune mutual reception. Uranus’ entry into Neptune-ruled Pisces in 2003 began an eight year sharing of energies with Neptune ( Neptune will be in Uranus-ruled Aquarius until 2012).

Neptune rules movies, and Uranus rules technology. Therefore, we are witnessing a revolution in movie technology. King Kong’s director, Peter Jackson, is a master of digital film-making. There are scenes in King Kong that are beautiful and sublime, yet many of the scenes—lush jungle island waterfalls, breathtaking sunsets, twinkling winter cityscapes—are computer software creations. The island monsters are actually digital animations a few steps beyond Toy Story. The recent hit movies Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, War of the Worlds, and Batman Begins all relied heavily on digital effects—and all were produced during the Uranus-Neptune mutual reception.

The length of the movie is truly Jupiterian—over three hours. It has not met sales projections in its opening weekend and is part of an overall decline in movie ticket sales (see news article). Although there are problems with King Kong (an interminable exposition and too many island monsters, the latter a probable precursor to King Kong video games), the movie’s lagging ticket sales represent part of a larger trend away from movie theaters.

This is due to a number of factors. Like Krispy Kreme doughnuts, a number of movies today have all the downside of Pluto in Sagittarius: too much sugar glazing, heavy calories, and they are expensive.

The public seems to prefer the movie version of a salad bar—a stroll down the DVD aisle at the local video store. We can also order takeout from Netflix—and some people just stiff the restaurant by downloading movies for free off the Internet. It is, in general, part of the diffusion away from a central organizing power hierarchy—Neptune’s separating aspect from Pluto. More specifically, the shared energies of Uranus and Neptune (through the conjunction of 1993 and the current mutual reception) are shifting movie and music power from the old-fashioned industrial model and putting it into iPods (and other personally controlled entertainment devices) everywhere.
