Red
Eye and
Pluto in Capricorn
On
the heels of War
of the Worlds comes another 9/11-themed film, Red Eye. Movies sometimes reveal what’s
beneath the cultural surface and in Red Eye, one can see the outlines of
Pluto in Capricorn. Earlier this year, Pluto came within
just six degrees of Capricorn. Transiting Pluto now closely
squares the U.S. Neptune, which may help to create the conditions
for Pluto’s energies seeking release through
Hollywood movies.
Red
Eye’s director, Wes Craven, has a prominent Mars
in Capricorn (see horoscope—no
birth time, set for noon). Mars is exalted in Capricorn
and for a film maker this can indicate a delight in elevating
tension, prolonging and controlling audience reactions.
Wes Craven is best-known for directing the original Nightmare on Elm Street and all three Scream
movies.
Rachel
McAdams is an up-and-coming actress who plays the heroine
in Red Eye. In
the movie, she sits next to a flirtatious young man who
turns out to be a terrorist on a late night airplane flight.
One movie reviewer described McAdams’ performance
as “suggesting a depth of intensity uncommon in most
Hollywood ingйnues”
(read
the review). This may be because she has a Sun-Pluto
conjunction and Venus in Scorpio (see
horoscope—no birth time, set for noon). Her Venus
is currently being squared by transiting Neptune.
Red Eye’s
combination of an airplane, darkness, Homeland Security,
claustrophobic airline seating, and terrorism in the hands
of an actual terror movie director evokes nothing less than
a disturbing future Pluto in Capricorn world. Like War of the Worlds, it resonates astrologically
in the context of our post-9/11 world.
(As
a side note, Red
Eye’s costar is Cillian Murphy and his next movie,
slated for release later this year, is called…Breakfast
on Pluto).
