Donald Trump’s nascent presidential candidacy is part of a larger trend also exemplified by Charlie Sheen’s popularity. Beginning a couple of years ago, Pluto in Capricorn ushered in an era in which there is a strong public hunger for authenticity--or at least the appearance of authenticity (an oxymoron). I do not condone Charlie Sheen’s behavior—especially towards women—but his colorful I’ll-speak-my-mind-to-the-bosses-and-damn-the-torpedoes attitude brought him sellout crowds (who subsequently walked out) for his “Torpedo of Truth” tour and made him a Twitter phenomenon. Similarly, Donald Trump's tough-talking pronouncements--although at variance with his past opinions--have captured the imagination of a number of voters. We can also credit Uranus's moves into Aries: headstrong individuals are in the news.
We saw the same thing in the public reaction to Steven Slater, the JetBlue flight attendant who swore a blue streak at rude passengers over the plane’s PA system and became something of a folk hero. People are very receptive to anyone who cuts against the grain and seems to be acting authentically.
The reaction to Donald Trump as a potential Republican candidate is part of this macro-trend. An undeclared candidate for U.S. president, Trump has been making his presence felt in the run-up to the 2012 presidential election. At this point, he is ahead in most Republican polls (which are essentially name recognition contests this early in the election season). He has gained traction with his verbal assaults on President Obama. His wide-ranging unscripted remarks—pronouncements that might be viewed as injudicious were they not so effective at keeping him in the news—seem to have come from Trump himself rather than pollsters and focus groups. Like Charlie Sheen, he knows how to leverage his own brand of authenticity to gain greater recognition.
Trump recently released his birth certificate, which includes his exact birth time, as part of his “birther” campaign against President Obama. Although it is unfortunate that any candidate for president continues to propound the discredited Kenyan birth myth (even Michelle Bachmann has acknowledged the validity of Obama's Hawaiian birth records), Trump's birth certificate does give us an exact birth time and thus an accurate horoscope.
Donald Trump’s horoscope should show the potential for great wealth accumulation, ego, and celebrity. Does it? And does it reveal anything about potential political success?
Trump is a Gemini Sun, Sagittarian Moon (he was born under a full Moon—more about that shortly), and his rising sign is—big surprise!—Leo. His rising sign is almost into Virgo, however, and if he was born just one minute later than the time recorded on his birth certificate, Trump would have a Virgo Ascendant. Based on Trump’s appearance, however, that seems unlikely.
Indeed, he is a classic Leo Ascendant: a flashy showman with a golden Just for Men, ego-saving comb-over and a cocksure verbal delivery. He has a lot of pride. SNL couldn’t have asked for better.
Some important features of Trump’s horoscope:
-
His 10th house of business and industry holds a conjunction of the Sun, Uranus, and the lunar North Node.
-
His horoscope has a self-contained bowl pattern in the Ascendant hemisphere (left side of the horoscope), indicating an individual who is self-directed in life.
-
Jupiter and Neptune both turned stationary direct within hours after his birth.
-
Trump was born under the influence of a total lunar eclipse.
-
Mars is in a Gauquelin power zone.
Donald Trump’s 10th House
The 10th house is the house of business, career, industry, executive management, administration, government, and the public self. Donald Trump has a 10th house conjunction of the Sun, Uranus, and the North Node. Coincidentally, another self-directed million/billionaire, Howard Hughes, also had the Sun conjunct Uranus.
Uranus represents individuality, rebellion, and nonconformity—not following the crowd. This theme is in keeping with the fact that most of Trump’s planets line up on the Ascendant side of the horoscope. Trump will often make decisions based on impulse or a gut feeling, typical of someone with a strong Uranus signature in the horoscope. The fact that this Sun-Uranus conjunction is in the 10th house means that these decisions are often related to his business and career.
His 4th house full Moon conjoining the South Node gave Trump his affinity for real estate and landed property. The South Node represents our past (past lives, genetic heritage, ingrained patterns of instinctive behavior); Trump began his career in his father’s real estate business.
Bowl Pattern and Eastern Hemisphere
The bowl pattern occurs when all the planets are contained in a half circle, with two opposing (or nearly opposing) planets forming the rim of the bowl. In Trump’s case the rim is formed by a lunar eclipse configuration: the opposition of the Moon and South Node to the Sun-Uranus-North Node conjunction.
The Eastern (or Ascendant) hemisphere bowl pattern symbolizes a pouring out of energies as the bowl is tilted towards the Descendant side of the horoscope.
We can also note his Part of Fortune sitting on the Descendant directly opposite his Mars, absorbing all the planetary energy pouring out of his bowl pattern.
Trump’s strong Eastern hemisphere—1st house, Ascendant side of the horoscope—emphasis denotes an individual who shapes his own destiny, in contrast to those with many planets on the 7th house, or Descendant, side of the horoscope whose lives are often intertwined with the destinies of others.
Jupiter and Neptune
Jupiter is the expansive king of the Roman god and goddess pantheon. He is the ruler of Sagittarius, sign of Trump’s Moon. In traditional astrology, before the discovery of the outer planets, Jupiter also ruled Pisces. When Neptune was discovered in the mid 1800’s, it was given rulership over watery Pisces. Jupiter and Neptune are thus sometimes said to be co-rulers of Pisces, each representing different facets of this sign. Both planets figured prominently at Trump’s birth.
When a planet changes direction on or near one’s birth, that planet assumes a powerful and heightened influence in life. For example, Hilary Clinton’s Scorpio Mercury went retrograde just a few hours before she was born; she is noted for exacting attention to detail and her ability to process information in depth. When speaking, she chooses her words carefully and listeners can almost hear Mercury retrograde in her cautious language, self-editing as she speaks.
A few hours after Donald Trump was born, Jupiter went stationary direct, meaning that from the vantage point of planet Earth, Jupiter appeared to cease its backward motion (retrograde) against the background of the stars and started to move forward (direct). During this transition, the planet slowed to a stop (again, this describes planetary motion as seen from the vantage point of Earth; in reality, it does not really stop) and its energies became magnified. The same thing happened with Neptune two days later.
Thus the co-rulers of Pisces both slowed and turned stationary direct right around Trump’s birth. Jupiter, the ruler of his 4th house Sag. Moon, allowed him to expand in the area of real estate. With Jupiter in his 2nd house of money and moveable property, he got rich off of 4th house landed property. Jupiter is also the ruler of publishing and Trump has written a number of books to help spread his message of wealth creation.
Neptune is the planet associated with celebrity and a platinum image. Trump has maintained his celebrity status through his various Apprentice TV shows. He has demonstrated an uncanny ability to keep himself in the public eye. There are other billionaires (although the amount of Trump’s wealth is disputed) who live under the radar and about whom one hears very little.
Trump's 8th house is his Pisces house, co-ruled by Jupiter and Neptune. The 8th is a watery, karmic house and the fact that its two rulers figured so prominently at Trump's birth shows the pre-destined, karmic quality of his life. Both Jupiter and Neptune actually reside in Trump's 2nd house, directly opposite the 8th.
He has no planets in earth signs. Usually, someone with a lack of the earth element in signs of the planets and Ascendant will not accept limitations on what is possible or achievable. There is a lack of grounding (one can perceive this when Trump speaks and it has made his persona such a rich source of parody), but it can work to his advantage because with a lack of earth there are no material limitations. Very often, the lack of an element in the horoscope will also lead an individual to over-compensate by grabbing wildly for the missing piece in life. Building and money are both represented by the earth element.
Total Lunar Eclipse
Eclipses are associated with destinies, either personal or global. The lunar eclipse that took place on the day Trump was born fell on his South Node in the 4th house, the house of real estate. According to Celeste Teal in her book Eclipses, an eclipse falling on the South Node symbolizes a “drawing-out of energy,” a theme which is also reflected in Trump’s bowl pattern discussed earlier.
The lunar eclipse stimulated Trump's 4th-10th house axis. The 4th house, where Trump's Moon is located, is the natural house of the Moon. The Moon and the 4th house both have to do with our roots, our origins. The 4th house, like the 8th, is also watery and karmic, and its importance in Trump's horoscope shows the karmic nature of his present life.
Trump's birth eclipse put a powerful cosmic stamp on his destiny.
Mars in a Gauquelin Power Zone
Michael Gauquelin was a French researcher whose work established a connection between planets in certain “power zones” and specific professions. Gauquelin found that Mars on the Ascendant, as in the horoscope of Donald Trump, was more pronounced in the lives of executives. (For those who wish to read further on this, see Chapter 13 of Michael Gauquelin’s The Scientific Basis of Astrology: Myth or Reality. Unfortunately, the book is out of print, but may be purchased used).
Donald Trump’s Political Future
Over the next eighteen months, through the 2012 election, Trump will be affected by the growing intensity of the Uranus-Pluto square. As Uranus moves into Aries, it is beginning to oppose Trump’s 2nd house Neptune and square his Mercury. At the same time, transiting Pluto in Capricorn (as mentioned earlier, Pluto in Capricorn has given rise to a hunger for authenticity which in turn has elevated people like Donald Trump) is opposing Trump’s Mercury and squaring his Neptune. A transiting Grand Square is being formed in Trump’s horoscope, signifying a build-up of internal energy that he will find hard to channel effectively. With a Grand Square—four planets forming four squares and two sets of oppositions—there is a lot of tension and not much room to release it.
It is clear that Donald Trump is riding a Pluto in Capricorn wave and he may continue to do so for some time, but as transiting Uranus and Pluto strengthen their influences in Trump’s horoscope the closer we get to the 2012 election, the more difficult it will become for him to navigate his new political path.
Trump’s Vedic Horoscope
In Vedic astrology, being born under a full Moon is highly beneficial. Although Trump’s Vedic Moon is in Scorpio, the sign of its debilitation, it is rescued by the aspect from Mars--the Vedic ruler of Scorpio.
The Sun conjuncts Rahu (the Vedic name given to the lunar North Node). In Vedic astrology, Rahu represents the serpent’s devouring head, symbolizing an insatiable need to fulfill the needs of the house where it is placed. Both the Sun and Rahu posited in the 10th house show Trump’s unquenchable, ego-driven need to achieve success. This is intensified by the fact that Trump is experiencing his Rahu mahadasha, a Vedic life period (determined by the position of the Moon) that will last well through the 2012 election.
Jupiter casts a benefic aspect on Trump's 10th house, which has helped him to achieve.
His Leo Ascendant (a placement shared with Sarah Palin) is in the Nakshatra—a horoscope sub-division—of Purva Phalguni, which is associated with fame, renown, and wealth through personal charisma.
Mars is considered to be the Sun’s friend, important for a Leo Ascendant because the Sun is the ruler of Trump’s Leo Ascendant (rulerships are very important in Vedic astrology). Mars is powerfully placed in Trump’s 1st house, where it becomes a “great friend” aspecting the 4th house (property, real estate) which is ruled by Mars. In addition, Mars rules Trump’s 9th house of luck and gains. He has gained great wealth through property and real estate.
The Leo Ascendant is not so good for relationships, however, (Trump has been married three times) because Saturn is the Sun’s enemy and it rules Trump’s 7th house of marriage.
Trump also has a weakened 6th house of enemies: he has been embroiled in various legal and financial conflicts over the years. His 6th house will cause him difficulties in any political campaign.
